Polo was first introduced to Russia around 1870, during the reign of Tsar Alexander II, as in many other European countries. However, polo started to spread in Russia first among military officers during the reign of Tsar Alexander III who took over the throne in 1881. Russian officers who went to summer camps located in St. Petersburg in the early 1880’s became the first Russian polo players. The first official Russian polo tournament took place on June 10, 1884 in St. Petersburg at the Peterhoff Military Field. The occasion for this polo tournament was the inauguration of the Peterhoff Hippodrome and historical records show that members of the Imperial family played in the June Peterhoff polo tournament and were active polo players. Unfortunately, all polo activities were interrupted in Russia after the 1917 Russian revolution. Address: Russia, Moscow region.
